What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview September 26-28

The weather promises to be warm and sunny this weekend in Ottawa, offering that perfect mix of fall scenery with summer-like temperatures. Here are some local events to enjoy on this beautiful weekend:

Ottawa REDBLACKS versus Montreal Alouettes

The Redblacks host the East Division rival Alouettes tonight at 7pm at a sold-out TD Place. The Redblacks have obviously struggled in their debut season, posting a 1-10 record to date, but spirits are high following a entertaining performance last weekend against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Redblacks are coming off a 35-32 overtime loss against one of the CFL’s best teams, and for a squad that has struggled for offense all season, perhaps it is a positive sign. It is “technically” still possible for the Redblacks to make the playoffs…but at this point, it’s more about providing entertainment for the home fans and building toward next season.

Ottawa 67’s at Kingston Frontenacs

The 67’s open their 2014-2015 season in Kingston tonight. There are lots of changes in store for Ottawa’s junior team – after spending the last two seasons at Scotiabank Place/Canadian Tire Centre, they return to Landsdowne Park at the newly christened TD Place. Following a difficult 2013-14 season in which the team finished last in the Eastern Conference, the 67’s look to rebound. With a new GM (Pat Higgins) and head coach (Jeff Brown), the 67’s will be lead on the ice by reigning Rookie of the Year Travis Konecny. Tonight’s game will air on Rogers 22 at 7pm.

Ribtoberfest

Ribtoberfest takes place this weekend along Sparks Street Mall. Eight different “ribbers,” who have travelled to Ottawa from places like Texas, Alabama, and New Mexico, are offering their take on southern BBQ with an “Oktoberfest” twist – cooking up delights like Bavarian sausage and sauerkraut…and of course ribs. With Oktoberfest specialty items, live entertainment, and great weather, it’s a perfect time to head downtown and enjoy the collision of two culinary worlds.

Etsy: Made in Canada

This craft event is part of a series of markets being set up across Canada on Saturday. The Ottawa region will host two separate events, one at the Bell Sensplex in Canada and the other at Les Galeries de Hull in Gatineau. At the Bell Sensplex event, more than 200 vendors will gather to showcase and sell original handmade Canadian crafts and goods. If you visit the event’s Facebook page you can see a sample of some of the offerings, which include everything from hand-crafted furniture to candles, soap, and clothing. Don’t miss it!

A Lung Run

On Sunday, A Lung Run will take place to raise money in support of the Give2Live campaign, founded by Ottawa native Hélène Campbell. The campaign is an extremely worthy cause, helping to support living expenses, medical equipment needs and travel to medical appointments for people in need of organ transplants. And the run/walk is a great way to support an awesome cause while achieving your own fitness goals and having fun. A Lung Run takes place Sunday morning in Barrhaven.
