What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview August 7-9

August is already in full swing, and we’re anticipating perfect summer weather this weekend. What better time to get out there and enjoy one (or more!) of the great events happening in Ottawa this weekend?

Ottawa REDBLACKS vs. Montreal Alouettes

The 3-2  Ottawa REDBLACKS had the week off following a 29-26 victory over Calgary in Week 5 of the CFL season. There’s no more rest for the wicked, however, because Ottawa plays host to the 2-3 Montreal Alouettes tonight at TD Place Stadium. The Redblacks already defeated Montreal once this season, and another win would give Ottawa the upper-hand in the season series. It’s far too early to think about playoff implications, but the win would also give Ottawa the tiebreaker over Montreal should they end up tied in the standings. Tonight is “Lumberjack and Lumberjill” night at the stadium. Come dressed in your best plaid, and you could win a prize! And remember, OC Transpo is FREE for ticketholders, so have fun and be safe!

Ariana Grande

If you have a young daughter, you won’t be surprised to learn that Ariana Grande will be playing at the Canadian Tire Centre tonight. The young songstress, who came to fame as co-star of the Nickelodeon show Sam & Cat before exploding last summer with the hit single “Problem,” is one of the biggest pop stars out there. She’s trying to repair her reputation following a donut incident last month, but there’s no doubt this young diva has talent. Tickets are still available, so you only have a few hours to practice the lyrics to “Love Me Harder” and “One Last Time!”

Jamday 2015

Come celebrate Jamaican culture at Mooney’s Bay Park on Saturday for Jamday 2015.  Enjoy performances by Fabian Marley, Luciano, Mackendy, Gyptian, Jahreefa, Starr Blacks, and Dredon. It’s time to dance, sing, and enjoy awesome Jamaican food. There will be games, a children’s village, and even a contest to find the Jamday Idol. This event is held in celebration of 53 years of Jamaican independence. “This popular event will be a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich culture of Jamaica trendy Reggae music, folk dances, songs, stories, gastronomy, traditional games and much more.” The event is expected to attract up to 2000 patrons. General admission is $20 if purchased online, and $30 at the door, so visit the website now to get a great deal!

Navan Fair

Head east of the city to the charming community of Navan for the 69th annual Navan Fair. What can you expect to find? Great food, games, and entertainment, of course! There’s a demolition derby, Alpaca show, antiques, horse and tractor pulls, softball games, kids zone, parade, and so much more. The headlining musical acts include rock band Trooper, country music artist Brett Kissel, and country singer Carroll Baker. Fun for the whole family!

And don’t forget…tomorrow is Dairy Queen’s Customer Appreciation day. So you can refresh with a cool treat at the end of the day!
