What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview October 3-5

October is finally here, and so it its first weekend. Though rain is expected on Saturday, it should otherwise be decent fall weather, so get out and enjoy some of the great events the Ottawa area has to offer this weekend.

REDBLACKS versus Blue Bombers

The Ottawa Redblacks host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers tonight at 7pm at TD Place. Can the hometown team get that elusive second win on the season and end a nine-game losing streak? The Blue Bombers are the weakest team of the West Division, but they have almost doubled the Redblacks’ offensive production. A win would be fantastic, but we know the awesome crowd will be doing their best to encourage the team either way. Get your tickets now.

Senators versus Canadiens

The Ottawa Senators will host the Montreal Canadiens tonight at 7:30pm at Canadian Tire Centre. It is the first game of a home and home series with the Canadiens, with the Senators exhibition schedule wrapping up tomorrow night in Montreal. The Senators current exhibition record stands at 2-2-1. Home games in the preseason usually feature star players, so it might be the first chance to see new captain Erik Karlsson wearing the captain’s C. Tickets are available through Capital Tickets and the game will air on TSN5.

Beau’s Oktoberfest

It is definitely a weekend to celebrate beer and Bavarian culture in the Ottawa area. Beau’s Oktoberfest kicks off Friday night and events continue all day Saturday at the Vankleek Hill fairgrounds. This event features great beer (of course), Bavarian cuisine, fun activities for the whole family, and live music from performers like Tokyo Police Club and the Joel Plaskett Emergency. Concerning food, a shout out to a personal favourite in Bowman’s Bar and Grill, who will be offering burgers and chili at the festival. Get your tickets now!

Oktoberfest Ottawa

For those located in the west and south ends, Barrhaven’s Oktoberfest offerings might be preferable (or you can hit up both events!) Taking place at the new Myers Volkswagen Auto Haus in Barrhaven, Oktoberfest Ottawa is sponsored by Creemore and runs all weekend. Aside from awesome food, beer, and Bavarian cultural offerings, you can take part in setting a Guinness Record on Friday night as the event vies for “Longest Beer Tent In the World.” On Sunday, kids under 16 are free.

Chelsea Wakefield Studio Tour

Once you’ve digested your beers and brauts, a different cultural offering is on-hand across the Ottawa River in Chelsea and Wakefield, Quebec. On Saturday and Sunday, drive through the gorgeous scenery of Gatineau Park en-route to the studios of various local artists. There, you can see up close and personal the working environments that go into creating artistic crafts. Explore at your own pace and visit as many or few artists as you’d wish while taking in the fall beauty of the Gatineau Hills.

Smashing Pumpkins

This great family event is not about the band, but something even cooler…yes, smashing actual pumpkins. On Sunday, come to Cumberland and launch giant pumpkins on a trebuchet toward a bulls-eye target. Even better, you can plant a pumpkin of your own to harvest next year – and either bring home…or launch again. There are also other activities like making model airships and playing with model trebuchets. The event runs Sunday from 10 am to 4pm, with special family pricing of $18 for two adults and all your children.
