What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview November 7-9

Ottawa received its first light snow flurries early this morning, and we’re expecting a full snow fall early this week. The weekend however, should be chilly but clear fall weather, so get out and enjoy it! If you still prefer the warmth of indoors, here are some of our recommended indoor activities this weekend in Ottawa:

SPAO Open House

On Friday night from 3-9pm, the School of Photographic Arts Ottawa (SPAO) will host its 10th annual open house. It is a great opportunity to celebrate achievements of the school, including the recent relaunch of its full-time diploma program. And of course, a great way to see some of the artistic and creative accomplishments of its photography students. For $5 you can be photographed by the professional photographers of tomorrow and purchase a print, and raffle tickets will be sold for a limited edition print by Ottawa native Robyn McCallum.

Senators versus Jets, Maple Leafs

It’s an all-Canadian weekend at Canadian Tire Centre as the Ottawa Senators host Western Conference visitors in the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night and division rivals in the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. The 7-3-2 Senators, who have looked good on a current 2-game winning streak, shut out Minnesota 3-0 last night and will look to carry the momentum against a surging 7-5-2 Jets squad. The game takes place at 7pm and will air on Sportsnet. On Sunday night at 6pm, the Sens face the 6-5-2 Maple Leafs, in a game that was rescheduled as a result of the events of October 22. The game will air on City.

Ottawa Pet Expo

The 2014 edition of the Ottawa Pet Expo takes place Saturday and Sunday at the EY Centre. The fun event is great for kids looking to interact with animals and learn more about our furry friends, and for adults to discover and shop for unique pet products. Pets are, of course welcome, and can participate in fun competitions like “dock diving” and a “flyball” tournament. With many interactive workshops, helpful talks, and lots of energy, this is a great event for the whole family – pets included! Pet-sitting is also available. Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and children 12 and under are free.

Ottawa Small Press Fair

This celebration of small and independent press is celebrating its 20th anniversary as an event. The fair features publishers of novels, cookbooks, magazines, comic books, graphic novels, poetry chapbooks and more. It is a great opportunity to support Ottawa’s creative community, and to try something new if you’ve been a rut of reading the same mega-authors. It takes place at the Jack Purcell Community Centre from noon to 5 on Saturday, and admission is free.
