What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview June 10-12

After a chilly week in Ottawa, the sun is starting to peek out again and we’re going to get the kind of weather you’d expect in mid-June! Let’s take a look at some of the great events and activities taking place this weekend in Ottawa:

Dessertfest

North America’s largest dessert festival takes over Aberdeen Pavillion at Lansdowne Park on Saturday and Sunday. Some of Ottawa’s finest restaurants and bakeries will be offering their wares, including Beavertails, 3 Tarts, the Cupcake Lounge, Art Is In Bakery, Oh So Good, and many more great vendors. Indulge your sweet tooth with a walk through chocolate land, candy land, ice cream land, and other sugary sweet destinations. Remember, OC Transpo rides are free for ticket holders! Admission is $13 at the door ($10 if you like/share the Dessertfest Facebook page) and $10 online. You can buy coupons for dessert samples at the venue. Kids 12 and under have free admission!

Westboro Fuse

Formerly known as Westfest, Westboro Fuse takes over Richmond Road in Westboro Village this weekend. From the MEC Ottawa Race on Friday night to musical performances by Bella Cat, the Peptides, and the Riot Police, to craft beverage tasting, gymnastic shows, cooking demonstrations, and so much more, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy! Stop in at a few of the great restaurants and shops that make up the heart of Westboro Village, learn, play, listen, enjoy – you can even zipline on a 400 ft zip line! Admission is completely free and most events and activities are free of charge. Don’t miss it!

LEGO Imagine Nation Tour

If you have a son or daughter between the ages of 2 and 40, you can bet they currently have an affinity to LEGO or at least a soft spot in their heart from back in the day. Everything is awesome at the LEGO Imagine Nation Tour, which stops in Ottawa at the EY Centre this weekend. The whole family can complete interactive play missions,  take a peek at life-sized LEGO models, and meet and learn from a Master Builder (one of only seven in the entire world). Kids will love jumping into the “brick pit,” and that’s just the start! To get you prepped for the event, why not create a minifigure version of yourself? General admission is $28.50 plus tax and service charges.

Canada Dance Festival

The Canada Dance Festival wraps up on Saturday. It’s your last chance to enjoy events hosted at venues like the NAC Theatre and Arts Court. While many events are sold out, tickets are still available for Friday night events Frame Lines: 11 Choreographies for Cinema (CLUB SAW),  Justine Chambers’ Family Dinner: The Lexicon (Arts Court Theatre), Robert Desrosiers’ Timeframe (50 Dancers Project) (NAC Theatre). On Saturday, events include Sylvie Desrosiers’ douce tourmente (Arts Court – Odd Box),  Marta Marta Productions’ Speaking in Ligeti, and MOonhORsE dance theatre’s Older & Reckless (Arts Court- Theatre). And of course, Beau’s Festival Bar at Arts Court’s Odd Studio is the place to meet and greet and enjoy the festival vibe (nightly at 9:30 pm).  Friday’s guest musical programmer is Justine Chambers & Family, while the festival closes with Nic Lydiate. You can buy tickets here.

Ottawa Dog Festival

Ottawa’s first outdoor furry festival takes over the grounds of the RA Centre this weekend! The Ottawa Dog Festival is a celebration of the “grace, beauty, athleticism, loyalty, intelligence, and yes, even the silliness of our four-legged best friends!” Bring your pooch to the grounds to enjoy doggy play zones, lounge on the patio, and shop everything from dog toys to special treats for your furry friend. There’s plenty for humans to enjoy, too! Admission and parking are both FREE (some paid games/activities) and the event runs from 10-6 on Saturday, 10-5 on Sunday.

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!
