What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview December 19-21

Can you believe it’s the last weekend before Christmas? If you aren’t out shopping for gifts or putting the last touches on your tree and decorations around the house, here are some of the fun events happening this weekend in Ottawa:

Ottawa Senators vs. Anaheim Ducks

Coming off a successful 2-0-1 road trip, the Senators return home to Canadian Tire Centre tonight for a 7:30 faceoff against the Anaheim Ducks. The Senators won their last game 2-0 over the New Jersey Devils thanks to outstanding play by Craig Anderson and bookended by two Kyle Turris goals. Bobby Ryan will get to rematch against his former team tonight, but it looks unlikely that Dany Heatley will suit up. Heatley has suffered through injuries and poor play and hasn’t been in the Anaheim lineup since early November, playing on 4 NHL games this year. It is the Senators last home game before the Christmas break, so cheer them loud, Sens fans!

Originals Ottawa Christmas Craft Sale

The Original Christmas Craft Sale runs daily until December 21st, giving you plenty of opportunity to fit shopping for a unique gift items into your schedule. Though it has been open since December 11th, time is ticking on this big craft sale. With over 200 talented vendors, find special gifts for your loved ones or simply treat yourself with decorations, jewellery, art, and fashions. Admission is only $7 with unlimited readmission.

Christmas in the Byward Market

Come to the Byward Market on Saturday and Sunday for free horse-drawn wagon rides through Ottawa’s historic market district. Be delighted by the talented singers in the Cantebury Alumni Chamber Chorus on Saturday and Le Coeur de L’Ile on Sunday. The choirs perform at the corner of William and York, and this is where you can sign up for your free ride. After your tour and entertainment, stick around the market for unique shopping ideas and great food.

Nightmare Before Xmas

If you didn’t get enough spooks on Halloween, the Haunted Walk has you cover with the Nightmare Before Xmas on Saturday. If you can’t make it, don’t worry…the haunted walk is renamed “Nightmare After Xmas” for its December 27th offering. Tour guides wear cloaks and hold lanterns as they tell guests about local ghost stories and recount some of Ottawa’s darker history. It’s a great time to walk around downtown Ottawa seeing some of the Christmas lights and sights…with a spooky twist.

Christmas Crafternoons

The Bytown Museum is host to this fun and educational workshop. Kids will learn about Christmas craft traditions during the Edwardian Era and the Great War. Just like real Ottawa families one hundred years ago, kids can make Christmas craft decorations like paper garlands and chains, and mini-stockings crafted out of yarn. Children can create Princess Mary keepsake boxes to store their own goodies or give as presents.  Sunday afternoon is the last chance to get this taste of history, so don’t miss your chance!
