Our Favourite Free Apps

Our Favourite Free Apps

We all know and love staple apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest. But whether you use an iPhone, Android device, or even BlackBerry, there are many great free apps which provide great service or entertainment. Here are our favourite free smartphone apps:

Flipp

Available on all devices, including BlackBerry, Flipp lets you browse local flyers and “clip” sales which catch your interest. Simply enter your postal code, and Flipp will collect all local flyers for things like groceries, drug stores furniture, home improvement stores, department stores, and more. Compare prices and make sure you get the best deals on all your shopping.

BusBuddy

Specifically designed for Ottawa’s OC Transpo bus system, Bus Buddy helps ease the traveling process for Ottawa bus riders. BusBuddy lets you view bus routes, check arrival times, and even includes a trip planner. With integration of Yellow Pages data to help search for businesses and coordinated with Apple/Google Maps, this free easy-to-use app is a must for all OC Transpo riders.

Canada Post App

Available on all devices, Canada Post’s mobile app features all the great resources of the website in the palm of your hand. Look up a postal code, find a local post office, and even track your packages (with convenient labelling so you know when your shirt from Amazon or book from eBay is due). The “Picture Postage” feature even lets you take photos from your phone and turn them into customized stamps.

Shazam

What’s that song? Shazam has the answer. Shazam is an app available on all platforms which recognizes music playing around you (on the radio, on TV, or even just you humming a melody that’s stuck in your head) and comes up with the artist and song title. It can even show you the lyrics and connect you to buy a copy of the song if you like it. Never again will you be stuck with an unrecognizable song in your head.

theCHIVE

It brands itself as “probably the best free app in the world,” and for fans of funny pictures and videos, theCHIVE probably lives up to its name. If you have a few minutes to kill, there’s no better place to find viral videos, funny gifs, epic fails, and awesome pictures. While you may not want to be browsing this app when your boss walks by, it’s a great app for certain situations.

Flixster

If you’re a movie fan, there’s no better app. GPS location will help you find a theatre location closest to you, so you can check out movie times and plan your night. Synced with Rotten Tomatoes data, you’ll know which movies to steer clear of and which come highly recommended by critics. Watch trailers, save favourites, and bookmark future releases so you don’t miss out as the release date approaches.

We love these free apps and all the great features they offer. If you have any free apps you’d like to recommend, let us know!
