The Senators went to the desert and pummeled the struggling Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night, notching an impressive 5-1 win. The big offensive performance tied Ottawa’s best goal differential of the season, which came in a 6-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Milan Michalek potted a powerplay goal in the first to end a tough 0-for-29 stretch with the man advantage, and Cody Ceci doubled the powerplay tally off a nifty pass from Erik Karlsson early in the third. Five different goalscorers paced Ottawa to its 17th win of the season. The team wraps up its five-game road trip tomorrow night in Dallas, as they clash with Jason Spezza and the Stars.
The Ottawa 67’s continue to confound with inconsistent performances, but they did rack up two wins to pair with a loss over the weekend. They are well-placed in the standings, holding second place in the East Division. Captain Travis Konecny had a goal and an assist as the 67’s toppled Sault Ste. Marie 3-2 on Thursday night. The win was followed up with a huge 8-4 shellacking of the Windsor Spitfires, with two goal performances by three (!) different Ottawa players and a four-point night for the captain. Konency scored an additional goal in a 5-2 home loss to Kingston on Sunday, giving the draft hopeful a ridiculous 7-point weekend. He’ll try to continue the hot streak during a busy weekend with games against Owen Sound (Friday) and a home-and-home series with the Peterborough Petes.
University basketball returned to action following the break for exams and Christmas, the men’s teams did not disappoint. The Ottawa Gee-Gees scored a tense 68-66 win over their previously undefeated Carleton Ravens opponents on Saturday, eking out a one-game advantage in the standings. Both teams are basketball powerhouses, and it all came down a Johnny Berhanemeskel basket with 19 seconds remaining. The impressive Ravens will have a chance to redeem themselves when the two teams rematch on February 6th at Canadian Tire Centre.
