It was announced earlier today that Curtis Lazar was named captain of Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Phenom Connor McDavid and Buffalo Sabres prospect Sam Reinhart will serve as alternates. Lazar, a 19-year old rookie in the NHL, was loaned to Team Canada by the Ottawa Senators last week. Lazar scored his first NHL goal against the Buffalo Sabres on December 15th, but despite his strong NHL play, playing with Team Canada will give the youngster a good opportunity to be in a leadership position.
Lazar had a strong tournament when he represented Canada last year, scoring 7 points in 7 games. The team finished in a disappointing 4th place, extending a 5-year gold medal drought. Captain Lazar, Senators prospect Nick Paul and hockey phenom Connor McDavid will attempt to reverse the trend when the tournament officially kicks off on Boxing Day.
Good luck Captain Curtis, and good luck Canada!
