The Vagina Monologues Premieres this Friday!

We are happy to present this press release by VDay Ottawa:
As Friday’s opening night production of The Vagina Monologues approaches, local volunteer group VDay Ottawa (TVM) 2015 says the acclaimed play is just as relevant today as in 2006, when the play first came to Ottawa.
“Bill Cosby, Jian Ghomeshi, violent online comments posted about women by students at Dalhousie and the University of Ottawa…these are just a few disturbing news stories over the last year that prove rape culture is still prevalent in everyday society,” says Sandi Stoliar, producer of The Vagina Monologues.
VDay Ottawa (www.vdayottawa2015.com) is a local effort within the international context of the 2015 VDay Campaign: a global movement to end violence against women and girls worldwide.
“One of VDay’s slogans is ‘Until the violence stops’,” adds Stoliar. “Until the violence stops, The Vagina Monologues will continue to play a critical role in raising awareness and funds for local and worldwide anti-violence organizations. Until the violence stops, there will be a need for a play like The Vagina Monologues. Until the violence stops, we are committed to making our community safer for women through this performance.”
Proceeds from this year’s production will go towards three charities working to end violence against women: 90% will go toward community organizations Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa (SASC) and the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC); and 10% to VDAY’s One Billion Rising Campaign Revolution.

Evening performances
The Vagina Monologues will be performed at Ottawa’s Bronson Centre (211 Bronson Avenue) the evenings of Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance, and $35 at the door. VIP tickets are also available.

ALL AGES matinee & “talk-back” session
New this year! On February 22 at 2 p.m., VDay Ottawa will host an intimate staged reading, with more dramatic scenes from the play toned down for younger audiences. The reading will be followed by a moderated talk-back session, with discussion topics including Healthy Boundaries, Consent, Teen Empowerment, and Community Support. High school students are encouraged to attend the Sunday performance at a discounted price of only $10 (regular price for the matinee is $20). All ages are welcome.
