What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview November 14-16

The November chill has begun in Ottawa, but that shouldn’t keep any of us from enjoy the various events and activities scheduled for this weekend. Here is a preview of some of the great events this weekend in Ottawa:

Ottawa 67’s vs. Belleville Bulls

Following ice issues that cancelled home games last week, the Ottawa 67’s finally get to entertain the home crowd when they host the Belleville Bulls on Friday night at 7:30pm. The 67’s current record stands at 7 wins and 8 losses, and the team can reach .500 with a win tonight, but it won’t be an easy task against the strong 12-5 Belleville Bulls. The 67’s will also play the Guelph Storm in a Sunday afternoon tilt. Keep an eye out for scoring sensation Dante Salituro (13 goals in 16 games) and goaltender Liam Herbst, who looks to continue his strong performances in goal.

The Dixie Swim Club

This play tells the story of five Southern Belles, college swim teammates, who get together once per summer to reunite and reminisce over old times. The Dixie Swim Club follows the ladies through four of these weekend reunions set decades apart. This “hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever” wraps up this weekend at the Gladstone Theatre, so don’t miss it. Tickets are $18, and $15 for seniors and students. Remaining showtimes include Friday at 7:30pm, and two shows on Saturday at 2:30pm and 7:30pm.

Gift of Art

This weekend, the Kanata Civic Art Gallery presents the Gift of Art Show and Sale. In support of Hospice Care, this show is a great opportunity to see the work of some of the region’s most talented artists, and it’s a the perfect way to support local artists. Whether you want a new painting to decorate the house, or find the perfect Christmas gift for the art lover in your life, the Gift of Art show has fine works of art to suit all comers. Admission is free, and the event runs from 10am-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Signatures Show

Taking place this weekend at the Shaw Centre (formerly Ottawa Convention Centre) downtown, this celebration of Canadian artisans and craftsmen is a great place to to pick up Christmas gifts, treat yourself, or just browse some of the impressive craftsmanship. With over 180 artists, artisans and designers from across Canada featuring handmade jewellery, art, home decor, fashion, and health & beauty products, there is something for every taste at the Signatures Show. The event continues all weekend and entry is $10 for an adult, $6 for seniors.

Words & Kurds Cultural Event

Taking place at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library on Saturday from 1:30-3:30, this lively event features timely and topical sharing of stories about Kurds. Hear compelling speakers like Sardar Saadi of the Rojava Media Project, Laurie Fraser, author of The Word Not Spoken, and Kurdish poet/author Jaffer Sheyholislami. Admission is free and refreshments are provided, so come and join in!
