What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview April 22-24

Are you loving this weather or what? It’s expected to cool a little bit this weekend, but still be gorgeous spring weather. While you’re out enjoying the beautiful days, why not stop by at one of the great events happening in Ottawa this weekend?

Hedley – Hello World Tour

Arguably the most successful Canadian band going (if we forget Nickelback exists), Hedley brings their world tour to the Canadian Tire Centre this Saturday. Along with them are special guests Carly Rae Jepsen (who we really really really really really like) and young newcomer Francesco Yates, whose hit “Sugar” is a mainstay on the radio these days. Pop-rock band Hedley hail from Abbotsford, BC, Carly Rae Jepsen is from Misson, BC (later based in Vancouver), and 20-year old Francesco Yates is from Toronto, so this concert event is as Canadian as it gets. Tickets are still available via Capital Tickets.

Ottawa Grassroots Festival

Come to the Southminster United Church in Old Ottawa South this weekend to enjoy the beautiful sounds of the Ottawa Grassroots Festival. Headliners include Garnet Rogers, Dave Gunning, Arthur McGregor with Wendy Moore, Robert Paquette, and Céleste Lévis. A weekend pass is $45, but daytime activities on Saturday are FREE. There’s so much to see, like a ukulele workshop with Mike Leeworthy (Folklore Stage, 11 am), Baking Cookies with Jill Zmud and Megan Piercey Monafu (Rideau Stage, 3 pm), and Gil’s Grassroots Hootenanny Contest (Community Stage, 2:30 pm).

Ontario Welsh Festival

The annual Ontario Welsh Festival (Gwyl Gymreig Ontario) takes place at the Lord Elgin Hotel in downtown Ottawa this weekend. A celebration of Welsh music and culture, the event also features a Gala Concert at Dominion-Chalmers United Church on Cooper Street on Saturday night. Come listen to the stunning voices of the Three Welsh Tenors, accompanied by the award-winning Cordydd choir from Cardiff. Tickets to the Gala are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The gala is followed by Hymn Singing on Sunday morning at the church. Don’t miss the marketplace at Lord Elgin, with imported sweets, homemade soaps, handcrafted scarves, and other Welsh favourites!

Earth Day

Don’t forget, this Friday is Earth Day! Get out and enjoy what makes this world such a beautiful place, and do your part in helping keep our planet healthy! The Rock the World with Kindness Fair happens on Saturday morning in Bells Corners. Drop off your electronic waste, take part in an upcycling challenge, make your own recycled greeting cards, and so much more! All events are free, including a Memorial Tree planting. This is a great family-friendly, earth-friendly way to spend a sunny Saturday morning!
