What to Do in Ottawa: Weekend Preview April 15-17

I know we didn’t have to deal with snow and bitterly cold temperatures until after Christmas, but it’s April already! Enough with the minus days…fortunately the weather has got the message, because it is expected to be a warm and beautiful weekend in Ottawa (rising to +21ºC in Sunday!) Get out and enjoy the beautiful weather and some of the great events happening around Ottawa this weekend:

Ottawa Parent Child Expo

This weekend the Ottawa Parent Child Expo takes over the Nepean Sportsplex.  It’s great fun for the whole family! Parents get to meet and greet with more than 130 local exhibitors, including great gifts, products, and toys for kids, information about local education, family health, child care, summer camps, music lessons, and more! For the kids, it’s a whole weekend of fun. Meet childhood favourites like Dora the Explorer, Diego, and Teletubbies. Watch Mini-Pop Kids and other great entertainers on the mainstage, get your face painted, try your gymnastic moves in the playzone, keep your eyes peeled for special mascot appearances, and much more! Admission is just $12 for a family of four, and you can find a coupon for $2 off admission on the expo website. Parking is free.

Ottawa National Women’s Show

The spring edition of the National Women’s Show in Ottawa comes to the Shaw Centre (formerly the Ottawa Convention Centre) on Saturday and Sunday. Billed as “the best girls’ day ever,” this show has a little bit of everything, with exhibitors, presentations, and demonstrations in the realms of fashion, business and career, beauty and wellness, travel and adventure, food and drink, home and design, and much more! With special guest appearances by Y&R star Joshua Morrow, psychic Marc Jade, sex expert Sue McGarvie, and dating expert Suzie the Single Dating Diva, there’s something for everyone! Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door (children 12 and under are free).

Ottawa Orchid Show

The 35th edition of the Ottawa Orchid Show, presented by the Ottawa Orchid Society, takes place at the RA Centre this weekend. Learn everything there is to know about orchids and see displays of prized orchid plants from renowned orchid lovers from all over. Buy orchid plants of your own from well-reputed vendors, or buy stunning orchid artwork from the gallery. Don’t miss the judging by accredited AOS judges. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and kids between 8-12 (kids under 12 are free) – cash only.

National Tartan Day

In honour of National Tartan Day, a celebration of Scottish heritage, The Sons of Scotland Pipe Band of Ottawa will perform on Parliament Hill from noon to 1:30pm. This year is particularly special, as the band is celebrating its 120th anniversary (founded in 1896). Joined by the MacCulloch dancers, the Katharine Robinson School of Dance, the Ar N-Oran Gaelic Choir, and massed pipes and drums. Come join the group as they send a congratulatory message to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her upcoming 90th birthday!
